Schaffner didn't bother to cover his face in heists in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

His aggressiveness during the robberies sparked an intense nationwide manhunt.

Schaffner was arrested in Missouri in September 2009 after his appearance on the TV show "America's Most Wanted." Schaffner told authorities that he began the robberies to feed a drug habit.

Schaffner had been paroled from the Indiana Department of Correction in December 2008 after serving time for armed robbery.

He had previously been convicted on a number of charges dating back to 1993, including auto theft, burglary, escape, possession of a handgun without a license and resisting law enforcement.
