Traffic was backed up for quite a while overnight on Interstate 70 just east of the north split because of a police chase involving a motorcycle.

Indianapolis police began chasing a motorcyclist before 2:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of North Holmes Avenue.

The chase moved to the interstate, where the motorcyclist exceeded speeds of 100 mph before he crashed in the westbound lanes, police said.

The crash caused an extensive traffic backup. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police did not immediately release information about why the man was being chased.
