INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis International Airport was a madhouse Friday, with spring break travelers trying to get out of the heartland as quickly as possible, some of them bound for Mexico.Mexico is always a popular spring break destination, especially for college students expecting some debauchery. Most travelers had heard of the government's warning to cancel unnecessary trips to border towns in the wake of fatal attacks on Americans, but said they know what to do to stay out of harm's way, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported. The travel alert does not include travel hotspots, such as Cancun or Cozumel. Americans should stay safe as long as they stay in resort communities."I would be (worried) if we were going to the north part of Mexico. In Cancun, I think we'll be OK," said traveler Phil Kuntz. "We won't be going off the resort."Some travelers changed spring break plans because of the Mexico warning. Stacey Barron said she wouldn't risk going there because she is traveling alone."I'd like to go to Mexico, but I don't have anybody to see there," she said. "I'm going to Colorado instead."Susan Sullivan, communications manager at the airport, said an influx of spring break travelers is expected to last at least through Monday. In a typical weekday, Indianapolis averages about 10,000 departing travelers. On Friday, 14,600 passengers were expected to leave the city, with a peak of 14,800 departures on Sunday, Sullivan said.
