Online Daters: Perkins Case Not Norm

HIV Spreading Cases Prompt Concern, Caution

The case of a Greenwood man who admitted knowingly exposing women to HIV is shining light on the proliferation of online dating and some of the pitfalls that can result.

Tony Perkins, 47, was charged earlier this week with an additional 15 counts of failing to warn sexual partners of his HIV status. He previously pleaded guilty in two similar cases.

Perkins used dating Web sites to hook some of his victims, police said, including plentyoffish.com, which held a meet and greet Friday night at Clancy's, a bar on Indianapolis' southeast side.

While matchmaking Web sites can be quite effective, the rules of personal responsibility still apply.

People who attended the party at Clancy's were quick to boast about the benefits of meeting online, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

"It's a great way to socialize and have fun," said Jeanie Wehling.

Experts are concerned that some people aren't being cautious enough about the kind of people they meet and who they choose to have sex with.

Amy Owens, a singles coach, matchmaker and author, said singles shouldn't be so quick to trust, jumping into relationships without really getting to know the other person.

"You don't know about them online. You just have a dressed up, Sunday, go to a meeting version of what they want you to know about themselves," Owens said. "If you're interested in casual sex, don't be casual about the precautions. It could affect the rest of your life."

Police said Perkins used several venues to meet women, but plentyoffish members think his actions aren't the norm and don't reflect badly on the site.

"Not really, because it can happen anywhere," said Jim Moore, a member of the site.

Plentyoffish members said that they are cautious in any dating situation.

"First and foremost, don't do anything with them," said Lorene Snyder. "It's not about first dates and then that's it. I just don't believe in that."
