INDIANAPOLIS -- Gun enthusiasts who packed into the Indiana State Fairgrounds this weekend for the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show said a weapons law that takes effect on July 1 gives gun owners added responsibility. The law, which Gov. Mitch Daniels signed on Thursday, will allow people to have a weapon in their vehicle while parked at their job."I believe everyone should have weapons wherever they feel, as long as they take responsibility," said Michael Niese, a gun owner. "You shouldn't have it sitting … in the seat so anyone can break in and grab it. If it's locked up and secure, I don't see a problem with it."6News was not allowed into the gun show because, an organizer said, another Indianapolis TV station previously aired a story they found misleading.Roger Rund, a self-proclaimed gun and knife collector, said he hopes the law strengthens Second Amendment rights."I'm hoping so," said Rund, of Brownsburg. "I'm hoping ... we can keep the guns around."Some businesses have expressed concern about allowing employees with weapons onto their property. The Indiana Chamber of Commerce has heard from multiple members, some that are considering mounting a legal challenge to the law."They're extremely upset and very unhappy," said Kevin Brinegar, of the chamber. "Some … have even inquired about challenging the constitutionality."Not everyone who attended the show thought the law was a good idea."I think it's said to bring guns to the workplace," said Lauren Smith. "I wouldn't want the responsibility if someone took it."Smith's friend, Micah Docherty, disagreed."I wouldn't want to feel like I needed to take a gun to work, but it's nice to have the option for it to be legal," she said. There are several exemptions to the law. People will not be allowed to bring their gun to a job site at a school, child care center, domestic violence shelter, some utilities and chemical plants.
