Police: Superintendent Drove School Vehicle In DUI Arrest

Blood Alcohol Of Martinsville Schools Leader Was Double Legal Limit, Police Say

The superintendent of Martinsville Schools was driving a school-registered vehicle when he was arrested on a drunken driving charge early Sunday morning, police said.

Morgan County sheriff's Deputy Brandon Martin said he clocked Ronnie Furniss' vehicle at 61 mph in a 35 mph zone on Blue Bluff Road just before midnight Saturday.

During the ensuing traffic stop, Martin said he suspected Furniss had been drinking and performed a series of tests, according to a probable cause affidavit.

In a subsequent chemical test, Furniss' blood-alcohol level registered a 0.16, double the legal limit in Indiana.

Furniss told Martin that he had been at two bars, one in Indianapolis and another in Plainfield, had consumed three glasses of wine and "stopped drinking around 11 p.m.," according to the police report.

"I thought I was OK," Furniss told 6News' Joanna Massee. “Obviously, I made a terrible error in judgment and that’s something I’ll have to live with the rest of my life.”

Furniss said the school-registered vehicle is currently his only mode of transportation because he is going through divorce.

He told Massee that he does not believe he should lose his job.

"This was not a part of my work-related activities. I understand it's unfortunate," he said. "I think I have a lot to offer this school system and this community."

But some parents said they don't believe the superintendent deserves to keep his position.

"I think it's an abomination," said Teresa Fowler, whose granddaughter attends Martinsville's Central Elementary School. "I don't think he should have his job if he's going to be out driving and drinking and preach to our kids not to do things like that."

Furniss was also given a speeding citation. He was released on bond later Sunday morning.
