Police Defend Use Of Taser On 11-Year-Old

Boy's Mother Says Police Went Too Far

Indianapolis police are defending an officer's use of a Taser to subdue an 11-year-old boy.

Sgt. Paul Thompson said an officer driving by Roselawn Park on March 18 saw two boys fighting and went to break up the scuffle, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

"He walked up to these two individuals, tried to break it up, announced that he was police and actually tried to pull one of the children off the other," Thompson said.

According to the police report, the 11-year-old boy then swung and struck the officer.

Police said the officer, concerned one of the boys may be injured, tried to subdue the 11-year-old.

"He then took the probe cartage off of his Taser and administered what we call a dry stun," Thompson said.

The boy's mother, Tamika Jones, said she's upset that such extreme measures were taken to break up the fight.

"There's other ways to restrain a child," she said. "Children, you know, their bodies are a lot smaller than us adults, and it's scary that children are being tased."

Her son said his shirt was pulled up over his head in the fight, and that he thought another boy had grabbed him, not a police officer.

"The dude was holding me and the police officer thought I was still fighting him, and he tased me," the boy said.

Both of the boys involved in the fight were taken to the juvenile detention center. The 11-year-old was not injured.

Police said the case is closed.

"There was no violation of our rules and regulations," Thompson said. "The circumstances of the event have been reviewed by his command structure, and they found he did not do anything wrong."

Two Martinsville police officers are currently under investigation for using a Taser to subdue a 10-year-old boy who they said was "out of control" at a local day care.
