EDINBURGH, Ind. -- Gov. Mitch Daniels announced a $105 million plan to expand the Indiana National Guard's Camp Atterbury, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis, that would add hundreds of jobs. The expansion would be made possible by a land exchange, creating up to 800 full time jobs -- 750 military and 50 civilian -- Daniels said at a news conference.Camp Atterbury and the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center can currently hold up to 4,000 soldiers in training. Under the plan, the capacity would increase to 7,000."We’re proud to be expanding Indiana’s role in defending America. We're tremendously excited about the economic boost that an expanded Atterbury-Muscatatuck complex will bring to south central Indiana," Daniels said.Under the plan, the Department of Natural Resources would release about 1,200 acres of fish and wildlife land to the Indiana National Guard. In exchange, the DNR would receive more than 2,000 acres of land in Putnam County from the Indiana Department of Correction. About 800 acres of that land, adjacent to the Putnamville Correctional Facility, would then be used for recreational purposes. "This is a beautiful area. There's rolling hills," said DNR Director Robert Carter. "There's hardwood timber, a lot of small game."The National Guard wants to build administrative office, housing and other facilities to enhance its training capabilities."This proposal will allow Camp Atterbury to remain an enduring mobilization station and training area for the military," said R. Martin Umbarger, adjutant general of the National Guard.Approximately 5,000 acres of the Atterbury Fish and Wildlife area would stay open to the public under the plan.DNR plans to develop the Putnamville land for fish and wildlife use.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service would have to approve the proposal for it to be enacted. Two public meetings will be held to discuss the proposal. The first meeting will be on April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area. The next is on April 28 at the Indiana State Police post in Putnamville.
