A man who was found dead after a search that lasted for several hours Friday on Indianapolis' south side had been shot by officers, but it's still unclear how he died, police said.

Police swarmed a wooded area near Brunswick Avenue and Brill Street, where officers exchanged gunfire with the man at about 11:30 a.m., authorities said.

The man's body was found about 25 yards into the woods, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

Police said officers had shot the man, but it's not known if those wounds led to his death, or if he killed himself after he was injured.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Mount said the man, at first, was believed to be involved in two armed robberies at a liquor store and a bank on Indianapolis' south side, which happened within 15 minutes of each other just after 8 a.m. Friday.

The search forced the closure of U.S. 31 between Epler and Edgewood avenues, and caused numerous schools to be locked down, including Henry Burkhart Elementary School, which is in the immediate area.

The manhunt began after Indianapolis police were called to a liquor store in the 700 block of East Thompson Road at about 8 a.m.

Investigators said a lone gunman armed with an assault-style rifle robbed the store. Officers said they watched the man leave the store, but they weren't able to catch up to him.

About 15 minutes later, a man matching the same description robbed the Old National Bank in the 5900 block of South East Street, police said.

No shots were fired in either robbery, but a large search began with the assumption that the same man was involved in both robberies, police said.

When officers began searching the woods, they were fired on, police said. The man's body was found about 20 minutes later.

Investigators said Friday evening that, while coincidental, the two robberies were likely carried out by different people.

"The individual that was found dead in the woods had on him the weapons that were used in the bank robbery," Mount said.

The man, whose name wasn't released, wore a hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans and had a bag over his face during the robbery.

Police had called off a search for the second suspected robber Friday night.

Several Perry Township schools and the administration building were locked down. Some private schools in the area were also locked down.
