INDIANAPOLIS -- Friends, family, even police were shocked to learn the identity of a man who died in a shootout with police on Friday after he pointed an AK-47 at tellers during a bank robbery.People who knew Paul Sherfick, 29, well said they can't believe he robbed an Old National Bank on Indianapolis' south side, hid from police during a lengthy manhunt and died during a shootout with officers.Slideshow: Man Packs Rifle In Bank RobberySherfick didn't have a criminal background. He played guitar in two local bands, playing regular gigs at several Indianapolis bars, including Lizards Pub and Eatery. Friends there said they saw him Thursday night and that they saw no indication of problems. The next morning, Sherfick brandished an assault rifle in the robbery that prompted an extensive manhunt, forced schools to be locked down and caused U.S. 31 to be closed for more than two hours.Several Indianapolis officers found Sherfick in a wooded area. Police said he was struck by gunfire from police but also shot himself with the assault rifle. Authorities don't yet know which gunshots killed Sherfick."It's very unusual for someone to be involved in this type of crime to have no criminal history whatsoever," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson. "This is what made the process of identifying Mr. Sherfick very difficult. We had no fingerprints to go on. Therefore, we could not make a positive identification until members of his family were notified, and they were able to assist in making that identification."A close friend and employer told 6News' Tanya Spencer that members of Sherfick's band never saw it coming. They described him as a great, upstanding man, and they are struggling to comprehend what could have prompted the robbery and standoff.Sherfick was supposed to play with his band, The Dudes of Lord, at Lizards Lounge on Saturday night. The bar's owner said she expected the place to be busy. Instead, it was eerily quiet.
