Plan To Assign Letter Grades To Schools Approved

Change Coming Despite Teacher Disapproval

POSTED: 9:10 am EDT May 6, 2010

Indiana schools will receive letter grades starting next year based on how well students do taking standardized tests.

The State Board of Education approved new rules Wednesday for the A-to-F scale replacing the more complicated category names now used to label a school's performance.

Hundreds of teachers, principals and parents opposed the change at a recent public hearing, saying it would punish schools with more difficult-to-educate students.

State schools superintendent Tony Bennett said the new system will give the public a clear picture of how schools are performing.

"People don't understand the current system," he said. "We must have a transparent, easy-to-understand measure for parents, for community members, for educators."

The current system puts schools into categories such as "academic watch" or "academic progress."
