Ground was broken Wednesday on a new Wishard Memorial Hospital, which is slated for completion by 2013.

Hospital officials said the $754 million project to replace the existing hospital will result in 4,400 jobs during the construction phase.

Marion County voters approved a referendum to provide funding for the 37-acre project in November. Mayor Greg Ballard and other dignitaries were on hand for the groundbreaking.

"Wishard is providing excellent care now, and that will only be enhanced in our new facility," said Dr. Lisa Harris, Wishard's CEO.

"We're here today celebrating what I think will be the biggest legacy the city of Indianapolis will ever see for years to come," said Dr. Virginia Caine, Marion County Health Department director.

A 315-bed inpatient hospital, 200-bed outpatient clinic and 90-bed emergency room department will comprise the new hospital, along with a 2,400-car parking garage and other facilities.

“This is a moment that truly defines our city and our community,” Ballard said.
