Bus Riders Fear Loss Of Rides, Jobs

Planned IndyGo Cutbacks Leave Riders Worried

IndyGo on Wednesday announced a tentative list of cuts to try to float the financially troubled transit agency.

The cuts, totaling $3.2 million, include eliminating three routes, altering service on 10 others and cutting the frequency of buses on 16 routes from every half-hour to once an hour.

Officials said the cuts are unavoidable as their tax funding shrinks, and admit riders will be inconvenienced.

"There's a number of riders who will have to wait longer for the next bus, plan their own time differently. The connections that they make will have to be timed well," said IndyGo President Michael Terry.

Jay Carlson uses a wheelchair and depends on the No. 55 bus, a route on the chopping block.

"I'm just wondering how I'm going to get to where I'm going with my medical appointments and things like that," he told 6News' Norman Cox. "If they cut this route, I'm stuck. I mean, there's no way I can get to where I need to go."

IndyGo officials are critical of transit funding and say they get a smaller percentage of their funding from local tax sources than equivalent cities Columbus, Ohio, and Charlotte, N.C.

Transit advocates say the system in Indianapolis is clearly inadequate, even before these new cutbacks.

"It doesn't compare well at all in terms of the level of service, the number of buses that are operating, the commitment of the local community to fund it," said Tim Maloney with the Hoosier Environmental Council.

IndyGo has scheduled two sessions to explain the cuts to riders for Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m. at the Indiana Convention Center.

Transit supporters will rally before the afternoon session.
