Teen Dies More Than Week After Well Incident
4 Men Overcome By Fumes

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A 19-year-old Anderson man who was overcome by fumes in a Muncie well nearly two weeks ago died Tuesday evening, officials said.Justin Benson had gone into the 10-foot dry well pit outside a home in the 5000 block of East Centennial Avenue on May 26 after the off-duty plumber he was helping, Eric Dalton, 40, of Anderson, was overcome by fumes from muriatic acid.Two firefighters from the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department -- Brian Buck and Rick Compton Sr. -- attempted to rescue Dalton and Benson, but they were overcome as well.When all four men were eventually rescued, Dalton was pronounced dead.The three others were taken to Ball Memorial Hospital, where Benson remained on a respirator until his death."He had been struggling for days. There's no real surprises," Delaware County Coroner James Clevenger Jr. told the Muncie Star Press Tuesday night. "It's a very sad situation."Benson was engaged to Dalton's daughter, Hannah, and family members said the couple recently learned they were expecting a child.Compton and Buck have both since been released from the hospital.
