Department Wants Officer In Stun Gun Incident Off Force

Board To Decide Officers' Fates

POSTED: 11:36 am EDT June 29, 2010

Martinsville police officials want one of the officers involved in a controversial incident in which a stun gun was administered on a 10-year-old boy off the job.

Mayor Phil Deckard said Tuesday that top brass want Capt. William Jennings, a 36-year veteran of the force, to be dismissed or retire.

Officials would like the other officer involved, Darren Johnson, to receive a 30-day unpaid suspension and be placed on probation with the department for a year.

Police said Jennings slapped the boy and that Johnson used the stun gun on him after they were called to Tender Teddies Day Care on March 30.

Earlier this month, a special prosecutor said charges would not be filed against either officer.

Police said the officers slapped and shocked the 94-pound child after he kicked an officer as they tried to restrain him.

Jennings left the slapping incident out of his police report.

Johnson, who has been with the department for three years, included both the slapping information and the stun gun incident in his report.

The Board of Public Works and Public Safety will consider the department's recommendations next month.
