UPDATED: 7:19 pm EDT July 9, 2010

One person was killed Friday when a car was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer near Bloomington, state police said.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m. on State Road 37 near the College Avenue exit, said Sgt. Curt Durnil.

Investigators said they believe the driver of the car -- Charles A. Thacker, 31, of Bloomington -- began slowing to turn into a gas station when he was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer.

The impact sent the car off the roadway and into a culvert.

Thacker was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger -- Cynthia Osborne, 34, of Bloomington -- was transported to Bloomington Hospital with a minor fracture, lacerations and severe cuts, police said.

Both were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer -- Uriah A. Nevins, 38, of McCordsville -- was not injured.

Police said they were still gathering information about what caused the crash.
