Patrick Stevens, 41, who was arrested with his son on Tuesday in connection with Jaymar Majors' slaying, also said during an interview in jail that he was wrong for involving the son in the robbery.

Stevens (pictured, left) and his son, Damian Stevens, 18, were being held Wednesday on preliminary charges of murder, robbery and confinement. Police said the shooting happened while the father and son robbed occupants of a home on the 1300 block of South Reisner early Tuesday.

"I apologize to the young man's family. I know that doesn't bring him back, but I have children myself, and I know how they must feel," Patrick Stevens told RTV6's Jack Rinehart.

Patrick Stevens told Rinehart he shot Majors in self-defense during a fight that ensued during the robbery. He also said he had robbed Majors a week before the shooting.

Patrick Stevens said he was wrong to have brought his son (pictured, right) with him.

"My son (came) out of loyalty to his father. It was wrong for me to put him in that position. I said ... 'Watch my back,' " he said.

The case was scheduled to be reviewed by the Marion County prosecutor's office Thursday.
