INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's unemployment numbers remained basically unchanged in June, creeping up 0.1 percent, officials said.Businesses added 3,600 permanent jobs, but the loss of 4,700 temporary staffing positions led to a slight jump to 10.1 percent overall, according to the Department of Workforce Development.

"Indiana's economy added thousands of jobs in retail, manufacturing and finance, but those gains did not overcome a drop in hiring by temporary staffing companies," said Commissioner Mark W. Everson. "We hope this begins a trend of temporary jobs turning to permanent positions in mainstay Hoosier industries such as transportation and manufacturing."Growth was noted in the transportation and utilities manufacturing and financial sectors, which officials said include many high-paying jobs, 6News' Norman Cox reported."We did see an increase in those jobs in mainstay Hoosier industries like transportation and manufacturing. So we're looking to see if that's actually just an offset of temporary jobs moving to permanent," Workforce Development spokesman Marc Lotter.Michael Hicks, the director of Ball State's Center for Business and Economics Research, said the June numbers are good and point to an improvement in hiring in the state over the next six months."The news on private sector job creation, permanent jobs, is good, particularly if you look down into the sectors -- manufacturing, information technology -- sort of point toward a rebound," he said. "It's very likely that the permanent jobs reflect a shift of people from temporary jobs into the permanent job pool as businesses get a little bit more confident about the return of better times."The sharpest sector declines were in government employment, which were mostly census workers, and leisure and hospitality.Only Kentucky has a lower unemployment than Indiana in the region, though the jobless rate declined in all bordering states and overall U.S. unemployment is 9.5 percent.
