Water Main Break Floods West Side Roads, Yards

Neighbors Say They've Had Breaks Before

A water main break that flooded roads and yards on Indianapolis' west side early Friday is expected to be fixed before noon.

Neighbors reported the break near 34th Street and Lafayette Road at about 2:30 a.m., but told 6News' Julie Pursley they believe it had been spewing water for at least an hour before that.

The break buckled the asphalt on 34th Street and dumped water into nearby yards and parking lots.

One neighbor said the crawl space in his home was starting to flood. He said the area has had problems with breaks before.

"I don't know what's going to happen now. My whole yard is underwater," said Bill Jerge. "I've called the mayor's complaint line three times. I've got two case numbers, but no one's ever done anything about it."

Indianapolis Water said they estimate a 12-inch water main installed in 1960 gave way. Spokeswoman Lou Ann Baker said 58 customers were affected by the break, which is expected to repaired around 11 a.m.
