Driver Distraction Blamed In Crash That Closed I-69

Police: Truck Driver Was Looking At Navigation Device

A crash that closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 69 in Grant County for six hours Thursday morning was blamed on driver distraction.

Indiana State Police said two tractor-trailers collided at about 5 a.m. just north of the Gas City exit.

ISP Sgt. Rod Russell said that one of the tractor-trailers merged onto the interstate when the other driver, Filipp Pedashov, 29, of Tennessee became distracted by a navigation system and plowed into the back of the truck.

The crash ignited a fire that destroyed one of the trucks. Pedashov was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Part of the contents of both trailers was strewn onto I-69, causing damage to other northbound vehicles that struck some of the debris, but no one else was injured.

Police opened one lane of northbound I-69 by 11 a.m. Both lanes were back open by a little after noon. Traffic had been rerouted onto eastbound 22 to State Road 5 north to State Road 18 west and back onto I-69.

"Pedashov was cited for an unsecured load and speed too fast to avoid a collision," Russell said.
