A 64-year-old homeowner confronted a burglar in his northwest side home Thursday afternoon, shooting him in the chest, police said.

Phillip Dubbs, who lives in the 5800 block of Liberty Creek East Drive, told police he arrived home just as someone kicked in his front door at about 2:30 p.m.

Dubbs said he confronted the man as he was taking items from the home.

The 23-year-old suspect -- later identified as Bryan Tuggle -- was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

He was later arrested on preliminary charges of burglary and theft.

Police said Tuggle has prior convictions for carrying a handgun without a license, intimidation and resisting law enforcement.

Sgt. Paul Thompson said the shooting is being investigated as self defense.

Dubbs, who was alone at the time, told police his home had been broken into a year ago.
