MCCORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Some homeowners aren't pleased with the path of a major north-south road expansion proposed in Hancock County. The $90 million plan calls for the creation of a thoroughfare linking Interstate 70 and Interstate 69, widening the highway known as Mount Comfort Road in the south and County Road 600 West in the north from two lanes to five, 6News' Norman Cox reported.Hancock County Commissioner Tom Stevens said the expansion is needed to alleviate growing congestion from people commuting from Hamilton County and from the developing light industry and warehouse complexes around Mount Comfort."Even during this depressed time, we've had quite a bit of development that's happened along that corridor," Stevens said, predicting congestion will come to a head when Hamilton County finishes the widening of Olio Road, which abuts this project on the north. The Hancock County project probably won't follow 600 West exactly, with planners discussing a loop around McCordsville.McCordsville Town Manager Tonya Galbraith said the loop is needed because going directly through the town would rip out several businesses, including two gas stations and a new CVS Pharmacy."It would eliminate, potentially, those commercial establishments," Galbraith said. "It would affect a lot of homes on 600 West and there's a historic cemetery that can't be moved."Planners also said there's not enough clearance on the current road to build an overpass over the CSX tracks. But no matter what route is chosen, some area homeowners said the project would ruin their quality of life."We're a water ski lake community, and we live in our backyards," said Bryan Burney. "So the noise is going to greatly affect us, since either road will be less than 400 feet from the backs of the decks on whichever end the project goes."The county currently doesn't have funding for the road, but is hoping to obtain federal money for much of it.The plan is similar to another project, the Interstate Commerce Connector, a toll road skirting the east and south sides of the metro area that was touted by Gov. Mitch Daniels during his first term. The plan later collapsed under legislative opposition. But Hancock County officials said while that was regional in scope, the current project is meant to benefit strictly their area.
