A man wanted on outstanding warrants for sexual misconduct and battery was rescued Thursday after jumping into the White River downtown, police said.

Officers were called to the campus of Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis just after 4:30 p.m. on a report of a suspicious person driving a golf cart.

Officers said when they tried to approach the man, he jumped into the nearby White River and started treading water in the middle.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews deployed a boat and helped bring the man to shore.

The man -- later identified as Aloysius Rosselle, 35, was being held on charges of theft and fleeing police, along with the outstanding warrants.

No injuries were reported.
