Inspector Targets Taxi Company Violators
Code Enforcement Officials Say Taxi Headquarters Empty
POSTED: 6:01 pm EDT July 30, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS -- Code enforcement officials knocked on doors at the headquarters of Indianapolis cab companies Friday and found some businesses in violation. The sweep was part of the Department of Code Enforcement's review of all taxi license applications in the wake of complaints about service, 6News' Joanna Massee reported.City officials said Freedom Cab listed 4815 W. Washington St. as its address, but when code enforcement employees arrived there, the business appeared to be a day care and no one came to the door. When an inspector visited Nationwide Taxi at 3512 Rockville Road, he found the dispatch center was locked and empty. City ordinances require major cab companies to dispatch from a central facility around the clock.Co-owner Alhassane Barry told 6News that business is slow in the morning, which is why he isn't staffed all the time."Morning time is not busy, why we don't have dispatcher right now, but evening time, we will have dispatcher," Barry said.As the city works to hold businesses accountable, members of the Indianapolis Airport Taxi Drivers Association are getting upset about negative publicity."Well you have to understand, the city is trying to raise the fee," Jamal Ali, of the association, told Massee.City officials began cracking down on taxi companies last month. Bureau of Licensing and Permit Services Administrator Adam Collins said city officials may not renew licenses for companies that don't comply with the law."We are in the midst of cleaning up this process, and we don't plan on having these issues any longer," Collins said.City officials are currently reviewing license applications for every Indianapolis taxi company. They expect to announce a decision about renewals next week.
