Police: Man Tried To Get 7-Year-Old Boy Into Truck

Officers Investigate Howard County Abduction Attempt

POSTED: 5:29 pm EDT July 31, 2010

Police are searching for a man who tried to get a 7-year-old boy to get inside his pickup truck in rural Howard County Saturday morning.

Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert said the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. outside a home in the 5000 block of County Road 200 East.

"The child was playing on the front porch of the home when the dark-colored, late-model Chevrolet pickup pulled into the driveway," Talbert said in a news release.

Investigators said the boy walked toward the pickup truck and that the driver suggested he get in, communicating with the boy out his window.

The man left when the boy's grandparents came to the front door of the home, police said.

Police don't have a detailed description of the man, but said he was clean-shaven and white. The truck was described as a Chevrolet with a standard cab and a 4x4 sticker on the bed.

"We have not had any similar incidents in Howard County involving a vehicle of this description," Talbert said. "I'm sure the child initially thought the pickup was a legitimate visitor."

Officers patrolled the area in an unmarked car after the report, but they didn't find anything of note.

Police asked anyone with information to call 765-457-1105.
