INDIANAPOLIS -- Family members and religious leaders held a prayer vigil Sunday at the west-side home where a 3-year-old girl was fatally shot, police say, by a 4-year-old boy Thursday.

The father of Aunesti Lee Allen, along with her siblings were at the vigil, along with dozens of neighbors and community members, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

Religious leaders stressed the importance of keeping guns out of the hands of children.

Police said the girl was shot in the head in the 200 block of North Sheffield Avenue when the boy picked up a gun that had been left on a kitchen counter in a home in which four young children were present.

Investigators said the children frequently played with toy guns and that the boy probably thought the weapon was fake.

"It's very hard. We're just dealing with it the best that we can," said Cherry Fields, Aunesti's aunt.

"I miss her a lot. I've been having dreams about her and everything," said Briana Golder, Aunesti's cousin. "I just wish I could hold her and hug her."

The girl's mother, Fiona Lee, 26, was arrested on several charges, including felony child neglect. The son of her boyfriend pulled the trigger, police said, and Lee's two other children, ages 4 and 6, were also present.

"Let us keep guns out of the reach of children," said the Rev. Malachi Walker, of Great Commission Church of God. "Guns come with safety precautions. We must be conscious of those safety precautions."

The 4-year-old boy who officers said shot Aunesti is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized. Lee was held Sunday in the Marion County Jail.
