Police said three motorcycles were stopped at the light at 56th Street when K9 Officer David Bisard, responding to a request for assistance serving a felony warrant, came up behind them with his lights and sirens on.

The officer swerved to avoid the motorcycles, but ended up striking two of the bikes, police said.

"Witnesses say the motorcycles kind of just stood still, not sure of which way to go, and the officer struck the motorcycles in the rear while trying to avoid this," said Officer Brian Dixon.

Video from Skycam 6 showed significant damage to the front of the squad car, which ended up in the median. One of the bikes was sitting upright, while the other was laying on its side with some damage.

Eric Wells, 30; Kurt Weekly, 44; and Mary Mills, 47, a passenger on one of the bikes, were transported to Methodist Hospital.

Wells was pronounced dead a short time later. Weekly was listed as critical but stable, while Mills was in serious condition Friday afternoon.

Bisard and his K9 partner were not seriously injured.

"The post-trauma team was on the scene to assist him. He was not hurt physically, but he's not doing very well mentally, as you might expect," Dixon said.

Police said Bisard is a nine-year veteran of the department.
