Fair Organizers Ecstatic, Vendors Not So Sure After 17-Day Run

Vendors Say Extra 5 Days Nets Little Additional Cash

The Indiana State Fair wrapped up its 17-day run, drawing about 952,000 visitors to the delight of organizers, but vendors aren't as thrilled.

Cindy Hoye, the fair's executive director, said the crowds were wonderful for the event that ended Sunday, especially considering the hot weather.

Fair officials said temperatures reached at least 92 degrees during nine of the fair's 17 days.

"We had nine days of 92 degrees or higher, and many of those days were 95 or higher," said Andy Klotz, the fair's media relations director. "I think that's just too much."

The fair's attendance fell short of the nearly 974,000 people it saw last year, when it was first extended from 12 days.

Vendors said the fair's extension provided a nominal increase in business, but not enough to justify the additional days.

"Seventeen days is just a little too long for the vendors," said Lisa Price, who packed up gear Monday. "We're seeing similar amounts of income, similar gross, but maybe just a little bit more expenses because we're open five days longer."

Vendors think business would be more profitable by returning to a 12-day schedule.

"We get so worn out, and with the kids back in school, I think it made a difference," said vendor Joanie Monroe.

Hoye and Klotz said fair organizers don't have enough information yet to know about the future of the longer fair, although they are committed to the extended schedule for next year.

"We'll get the fair board together and the fair commission together and discuss all of the pros and cons and … figure out what is working best," Klotz said.

Organizers estimated that they made about $600,000 profit on the fair, down from $850,000 last year.
