PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- The recent furor over plans to build an Islamic center and mosque near ground zero in New York and a suspicious weekend fire at a mosque in Tennessee has renewed the fears of some about violence against Muslims in the U.S.

At the Plainfield-based Islamic Society of North America, business is going on as usual despite an increase in rhetoric in recent weeks, 6News' Chris Pisano reported.

"We've received some phone calls, some pretty angry phone calls," said Sarah Thompson, ISNA's communications coordinator. "Those are from around the nation, so we kind of expect those because not everyone is going to agree with everything."

Thompson said the organization expected an increase in vitriolic calls as the nation approaches the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The organization said it has had a positive relationship with the community, something Thompson credited to the mosque's open door policy and many community outreach programs.

"We've been really fortunate, and we have really strong relationships and support in this community," she said. "We, locally, haven't received any events of anger or violence. We've actually been receiving statements of support."

Plainfield police said they haven't noted any anti-Muslim backlash in recent weeks.
