Ind. School Districts Required To Have Bullying Policy
POSTED: 5:54 pm EDT August 30, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indiana lawmaker is pushing to toughen the state's laws against bullying.State Sen. Tom Wyss, R-Fort Wayne, said that while school systems may have bullying policies in place, he wants to make sure those policies are being implemented, 6News' Joanna Massee reported."We've got a lot of school systems where the administrators are not really following through like they should," he said. "Whether it's the fault of the policy, or whether it's the fault of the administrator, we've got to address this."Brandi Knight said she wishes someone would have provided better protection for her son, who she said was bullied daily while in the eighth grade at Indianapolis Public School's Willard J. Gambold Middle School."He was not really wanting to go to school. He didn't want to get on the school bus," she said.Knight said she didn't learn about the bullying until her son was suspended for saying an expletive to a female classmate. Knight said bullying preceded her son's outburst."(He endured) a lot of name calling addressing his sexuality, wanting to know if he was gay," she said.Tom Wheeler, a lawyer who represents school districts across Indiana, said attacking a child's sexuality is a common theme of bullying among boys.He said Indiana's law resembles those in other states."About five years ago, the General Assembly required schools to have policies on bullying, but really, the enforcement of those policies is left to the local schools, rather than really a statewide framework for enforcing bullying regulations," Wheeler said.Knight said her son is now in ninth grade at a different school and is doing much better.
6News will have a series of stories this week addressing the issue of bullying among children.
