Police: Man Was Rolling Joint When Child Shot

18-Year-Old Accused Of Shooting 5-Year-Old In Head

New details in the case of an 18-year-old man charged with criminal recklessness in the shooting of his 5-year-old cousin were revealed during a court appearance on Tuesday.

Documents show police believe Izriol Santiago was twirling a gun in one hand while handling marijuana with the other when the firearm went off, striking Miguel Luna in the head in a home at 1522 Lawton Ave. the night of Aug. 26.

Police said Santiago tried to run from the home, but was arrested a short time later.

Neighbors said Tuesday they were appalled at Santiago's alleged cavalier attitude about firearms.

"Kids are going to smoke marijuana. They are going to do that. But to be playing with a gun? Eighteen years old, he knows better than that," said Frank Jeffcoat.

"Drugs and guns don't mix in any way, and guns shouldn't be around kids," said Cherrae Jones. "Kids, drugs and guns don't mix at all."

Luna was listed as a no-information patient at Riley Hospital for Children on Tuesday.

"He did take a shot to the head. It was a few days ago now. I hope he's improved, but they wouldn't release that information," said Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell. "He's still critical."

Santiago was held on $200,000 bond. His jury trial is set for Oct. 28.
