FISHERS, Ind. -- A former Indiana University basketball player was among three people charged with burglary just two months after he pleaded guilty in a mortgage fraud scheme.Todd Leary, 39, directed two other people to steal appliances and electronics from foreclosed homes in Hamilton County, officials said.Authorities said Leary pilfered items from homes that were on the Hamilton County sheriff's foreclosure listings, but in at least one instance, someone still lived in the home."It appears that Mr. Leary was the scout, if you will, and he would find these vacant homes and would direct these two men ... to them to remove the appliances," said Fishers police Officer Tom Weger.Leary was arrested on two counts of burglary, a Class B felony and one count of embezzlement, a Class D felony. The other men were identified as Greg Campbell, 50, and Eric Campbell, 44. Greg Campbell was charged with two counts of burglary, while Eric Campbell faces charges of burglary and theft.Weger said the investigation began in April, when police were called to a home about a burglary. The victim told officers that someone had taken a refrigerator and television from the home. A neighbor gave police a description of the men, who told him that they were working for a bank.Police said they gathered enough information from the description of the men to determine who they were.Weger said officers saw the Campbell brothers three weeks later when they met with Leary, who pointed at a house and drove away before the Campbell brothers took a refrigerator from the home in the Ridgefield subdivision."Officers followed the suspects and stopped them in the area of 96th Street and Hague Road," Weger said.Police said they interviewed the Campbell brothers and Leary, but that Leary denied wrongdoing. In a May search of Leary's home, police said they seized cell phones, computers and sheriff sale foreclosure listings."Leary gave a second statement and again admitted no wrongdoing," Weger said.Leary turned himself in Wednesday after charges were filed. The Campbell brothers were already jailed in Marion County on unrelated charges.Leary pleaded guilty in July to charges that stemmed from an ex-business partner's multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme. His agreement with Allen County prosecutors called for him to face up to three years in prison, with that cut in half if he pays nearly $295,000 in restitution before a sentencing hearing in October.Prosecutors said Leary worked for a title insurance broker who pleaded guilty in a $2.7 million fraud case.Leary played for Indiana during 1989-94 and was an analyst for IU's radio broadcasts when he was arrested in February, right before a game against Purdue.
