Police: Man's Gun Jammed In Confrontation With Officer

Man Arrested After Chase, Scuffle

POSTED: 12:55 pm EDT September 5, 2010

An Indianapolis police officer feels very fortunate to have survived a confrontation with a man on the city's north side Saturday in which the man tried to use a handgun that had jammed, police said.

Officer Greg Shue said he spotted a stolen car at 40th Street and College Avenue just before 5 p.m. and pulled the driver over in the 3800 block of Carrollton Avenue.

Shue said in a police report that the driver, Darnell Madison, 21, "leaned forward with both hands and appeared to be working with something in front of the seat, by the floor."

The officer said he ordered Madison to show him his hands and pulled him out of the car before a scuffle ensued.

"He hit me in the right side of my head," Shue said in the police report.

The officer said that he used a Taser on Madison but that he got back into the stolen car and sped away.

The chase ended a short time later in the 4300 block of Carrollton Avenue, when Madison jumped out of the car and ran, police said.

Madison was apprehended a short time later under a parked car, Shue said.

Police said two 9mm handguns were found in the car and that one of them was jammed.

"It appears that he was trying to clear the jam in the ejection port to use the pistol on me," Shue said.

Madison was arrested on numerous charges, including theft, resisting law enforcement and auto theft.
