Family members of three motorcyclists who were struck by an Indianapolis police officer are calling on the officer to own up to the pain he wrought.

Thousands of bikers gathered Sunday for a rally and benefit ride to aid the families whose loved ones were struck by Indianapolis police Officer David Bisard a month ago. Eric Wells, 30, was killed, and Kurt Weekly and Mary Mills were injured in the crash.

The rally began in Pendleton and hit the road to Indianapolis. Mayor Greg Ballard was at the event, 6News' Myrt Price reported.

"This is such a painful part of the city's history right now, not just the accident itself, but because of some of the activities that went on just afterward," Ballard said. "That's the part we have to figure out."

Family members of the victims were also at the rally. Bisard, who was on duty at the time, struck the motorcyclists, who were stopped at a red light Aug. 6.

A blood draw taken about two hours after the crash showed that Bisard was intoxicated, but alcohol-related charges against him were dropped because police didn't follow proper procedures in procuring the sample.

Mills' daughter, Aja Margerum, said the surviving victims have a long road to recovery ahead.

"She's still in a lot of pain. She still broken, and she's trying to do the physical therapy on broken bones, which isn't the best thing," Margerum said. "She needs time to heal, but she also needs to start moving."

Wells' brother, Ryan Wells, said the family's hurt was worsened by the circumstances of Eric's death.

"It's rough knowing that someone that is supposed to be there to protect and serve was doing the exact opposite," he said. "No one is going to take this lying down. This isn't something thats going to be brushed under the rug."

Bikers who registered for the ride signed banners in support of the families before trekking to downtown Indianapolis, where they rallied on Monument Circle.

The families of the victims said they appreciate Ballard's sympathy and support, but they think Bisard should apologize.

"A little bit of remorse would be nice," Margerum said. "Just acknowledge that you hurt somebody and actually killed somebody. Own up to it. Be a man."
