Shutdowns Came Without Warning, Customers Say

INDIANAPOLIS -- With less than two weeks to go before his son's wedding, Dale Raber learned the store where he rented a tuxedo had gone out of business.
Top Hat Tuxedos' closure came without warning Tuesday, leaving Raber (pictured, left) in a bit of a tight spot."I thought it was just a shame that they were collecting money all the way up to the day they closed the doors," Raber told RTV6's Derrik Thomas. All Top Hat stores, including the four in the Indianapolis area, have shut down, according to a staffer who was reached by phone at company headquarters in Owensboro, Ky.The staffer said company president Joel High would call RTV6 for comment. As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, High had not called.Raber turned to Gingiss Formalwear, which agreed to come to his rescue."We can get tuxedos for someone in just two days, sometimes even overnight," Gingiss employee Dan Baidinger said. "So, we can service anyone's wedding if they want to come in."
Bryan Hanan, who is getting married Feb. 7, also is turning to Gingiss. He said he and his wedding party initially ordered from Top Hat, and were surprised to learn of the closure. Some paid Top Hat by credit card, and those payments can be canceled. But Hanan said some of his groomsmen may have paid cash."I don't know who has paid cash and who has paid by credit card," Hanan said. The closures apparently came before at least one wedding party was able to return their rented tuxedos. A note left outside one store indicated someone tried twice to give the tuxedos back.
