'Hoosier Millionaire' Winner Fatally Struck Hours After Show

Police: Driver Won't Be Charged

POSTED: 11:34 pm EST January 23, 2004

Hours after winning $57,000 on the "Hoosier Millionaire" television show, a Madison County man was struck and killed by a pickup truck as he walked to the store where he had bought the lottery ticket that earned him a spot on the show.

Carl D. Atwood, 73, of Elwood, was knocked to the ground and suffered a head injury in Thursday night's accident, Elwood Police Chief Toby R. Barker said. Atwood died later Thursday at an Indianapolis hospital.

Hoosier Lottery Director Jack Ross said Atwood had won $57,000 after he traveled to Indianapolis on Thursday for a taping of the television game show, which airs on Saturday nights.

After the taping, Atwood returned to Elwood with the check, Ross said.

About 7 p.m. Thursday, he was on his way to the grocery store where he had bought the winning ticket the landed him a spot on the lottery show when a pickup rounded a corner and struck him, Barker said.

"It was at an unlighted intersection and Mr. Atwood had dark clothing on," Barker said, "so the driver did not see him before he hit him."

Barker said the truck's driver, Brian Harris, 29, will not be charged because it was an accident.

Ross said the show in which Atwood was the top winner will air Saturday night.

"That is what they (the Atwood family) wanted to do, and at the end of the show we will have something in memory of Carl Atwood," he said.

Contestants for "Hoosier Millionaire" are selected from players of a scratch-off lottery ticket game.

Every three months, the top winning contestants from the previous weeks are invited back to compete for a $1 million grand prize. Ross said the lottery was working with Atwood's family to select a relative to take Atwood's place on that show.
