Woman Sentenced In Connection With Son's Death

Mother Pleaded Guilty To Neglect

POSTED: 10:22 pm EST March 1, 2004

The mother of a disabled Elwood boy who was found dead after a house fire was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison on a neglect charge.

Jennifer Norris

Jennifer Norris (pictured, left) pleaded guilty earlier this month to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

Authorities said the boy, Mark A. Norris II, 8, was found dead after a fire in January 2003 at the family's home in Elwood, about 45 miles northeast of Indianapolis. An autopsy revealed that the boy had died of pneumonia a day before the fire, and tests found evidence that he was malnourished.

The boy (pictured, right), who had cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair, was a ward of the state.

A social worker with the Division of Family and Children who was assigned to the case faces a felony neglect charge.
