Autopsy Scheduled On Body Found Off I-74

Man Reported Discovery At Abandoned Truck Stop

POSTED: 12:20 pm EST March 24, 2004

Authorities hope an autopsy Thursday will provide clues about the death of a woman whose body was found at an abandoned truck stop off Interstate 74 in Pittsboro.

Police said a trucker reported finding the body Wednesday morning. Authorities are investigating the death as a homicide, RTV6's Jack Rinehart reported.

The woman, whose identity wasn't immediately determined, was in her late 20s to early 30s, police said. Investigators said she was partially clothed and that her body showed signs that she had been tied up or restrained.

"There (are) some signs of injury, and it does appear that she was possibly restrained prior to her being here," Hendricks County sheriff's Capt. Brett Clark said. "She wasn't restrained at the time we found her."

Authorities said truck driver Rob Johnson, of Plainfield, pulled into abandoned building's parking lot (pictured, right) to get some rest shortly before 7 a.m. when he discovered the body. He called 911.

Police believe the woman's body was left there less than 24 hours before it was found.

Investigators believe there's a possibility the victim is not from the area because her body was found near I-74, a major east-west artery, Rinehart reported.

The Hendricks County Sheriff's Department said this is the first homicide it has investigated since October 2002.
