Police: Indiana Death Possibly Linked To Serial Killer

Victims Lived, Died Similarly

POSTED: 9:44 pm EDT April 7, 2004

The slaying of a woman whose body was found at an abandoned truck stop in Hendricks County last month may be linked to deaths in four other states, police say.

Police say a serial killer -- perhaps a long-haul truck driver -- may be behind the deaths of Buffie Rae Brawley (pictured, left) and eight other women since July.

Brawley's body was found March 24 at a former truck stop (pictured, below) along Interstate 74 near Pittsboro. An autopsy determined the 27-year-old Toledo, Ohio, resident died of asphyxiation.

Like the eight other women, she had been convicted of prostitution and was known to have sold sex at truck stops along interstate highways. All nine also were made to suffer right before they died, police said.

Brawley was last seen alive March 23 at an Indianapolis truck stop. Her body showed signs of having been bound, police said.

"This guy is a monster -- there's no two ways about it. He tortured this girl," Hendricks County sheriff's Lt. Clarke Fine told RTV6's Jack Rinehart Wednesday. "She was in terrible pain. I'd like to get him. I want to put him in prison."

The bodies of the eight other women were found in Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.

Police in Oklahoma are building a database using physical evidence, truck fuel receipts and satellite technology to see whether they can link a truck driver to the slayings, Rinehart reported.
