Three men were arrested Thursday night after $650,000 worth of marijuana was found in a traffic stop downtown, police said.

Indiana State Police said two vehicles were stopped because of minor traffic violations on Interstate 65 near the Meridian Street exit at about 9:40 p.m.

A passenger jumped from a truck and ran from one of the vehicles, and the second vehicle was stopped after a short chase, 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said.

"State police K-9 dogs … indicated the presence of drugs in both vehicles," Bursten said.

Police found packaged marijuana in the bed of both trucks. The pot weighed about 1,300 pounds.

The investigation led officers to a tractor-trailer on the city's south side that police think was used to transport the marijuana found in the trucks.

Robert Stewart, 46, of Indianapolis, Travis Contreas, 30, of Greenwood, and Julio Treio, 53, of Miami, Fla., were arrested on charges of dealing marijuana. Contreas was also arrested on charges of resisting and fleeing an officer.
