'It's Not About Sex; It's About Economics,' Activists Say

Several Indiana groups are taking action to combat an increase in prostitution and human trafficking that’s often associated with large sporting events.

A bill to toughen Indiana's penalties for sex trafficking is on its way to Gov. Mitch Daniels for him to sign into law ahead of next weekend's Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

The Indiana House voted 93-0 in favor of the bill Friday that cleared the state Senate in a 48-0 vote earlier this month.

Meanwhile, authorities are working with a group of Indiana nuns to combat the problem, RTV6's Rafael Sanchez reported.

Nun Theresa Flores had a candid message about the world of human trafficking.

“This is not about sex. This is about economics,” she said.

Flores said when she was 15 years old, her boyfriend forced her into the sex trade for two years before she escaped. She now shares her experiences in hopes of helping others.

"I hope we can rescue girls, missing children and just victims stuck in this who don't know how to get out,” Flores said.

A group of advocates and religious leaders have been meeting for months preparing for the Super Bowl, which may police said may increase the demand for prostitution.

Carleen Miller with the Indiana Protection of Abused and Trafficked Persons said the problem is all too common.

"We have definitely seen cases, not just sexual exploitation, but labor trafficking situations,” Miller said.

Marge Wissman is a nun who belongs to a group that buys stocks in motels and hotels so that it can demand action as stockholders.

"We are always on the lookout for justice issues, and we make sure our companies are doing just practice,” she said.

Many of the motels and hotels in Indianapolis’ 50-mile radius have pledged to report any human trafficking issues.
