A Lawrence teen who lunged at police with a machete as they tried to arrest him on a charge of animal cruelty is being evaluated at Wishard Hospital, authorities said.

The 15-year-old boy is accused of torturing his family's pets in a case that Lawrence police said was one of the worst they've ever seen.

Lt. Scott Evans of the Lawrence Police Department said a veterinarian reported that one cat's jaw was broken and its teeth were knocked out.

The officers used pepper spray to subdue the teen after they entered his locked bedroom and he refused to cooperate.

In addition to the felony animal cruelty charges, the boy faces charges of resisting arrest and criminal recklessness, authorities said.
