People Shot In Wednesday's Gun Battle

INDIANAPOLIS -- Police say the following people were shot in an exchange of gunfire Wednesday morning on or near the 2700 block of South Dietz Street.

Killed:

  • Officer Timothy "Jake" Laird, 31: Police say Laird, a four-year veteran of the Indianapolis Police Department, was fatally shot in the neck by Kenneth C. Anderson while Laird was in his patrol car. Laird, a 1991 graduate of Warren Central High School, served in the U.S. Marine Corps for eight years until he was hired by IPD on March 6, 2000. He was assigned to IPD's south district and received two commendations. He is survived by a wife and a 7-year-old daughter.
  • Kenneth C. Anderson

  • Kenneth C. Anderson, 33, of Indianapolis: Authorities say Anderson shot five officers -- killing Officer Timothy Laird -- before being fatally shot by police.
  • Wounded:

  • Officer Timothy Conley, 43: Conley, an eight-year IPD veteran, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was listed in good condition Wednesday afternoon. He is assigned to IPD's south district. He has received two commendations and three letters of appreciation.
  • Officer Peter Koe, 41: Koe, a 16-year IPD veteran, was shot in the knee and suffered a minor cut to the head from flying debris, according to police. He was treated and released. Police say Koe fatally shot Kenneth Anderson in Wednesday's gun battle. He is assigned to IPD's south district and has received nine letters of appreciation, two commendations and has previously received the department's medal of valor.
  • Officer Andrew Troxell, 25:
  • Troxell, a two-year IPD veteran, suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and was treated and released. He is assigned to IPD's east district.

  • Officer Leon Essig, 35: Essig, a three-year IPD veteran, suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, which broke his bone in two places. He was listed in good condition Wednesday at Methodist Hospital, where he was expected to stay overnight, IPD said. He is assigned to IPD's east district.
