Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson ordered flags to be flown at half-staff through Monday to honor a police officer slain in the line of duty this week.

A memorial was erected in the lobby of the south district headquarters where Patrolman Timothy Laird reported for duty.

Patrolman Timothy "Jake" Laird, 31, died Wednesday morning in what authorities described as a "rain of gunfire" from Kenneth Anderson, an Indianapolis man who was suspected of killing his mother. Four other officers were wounded before an officer fatally shot Anderson.

The mayor ordered all city, state and U.S. flags to fly at half-staff at all Indianapolis and Marion County facilities through Monday evening.

Peterson asked that private citizens and businesses do the same.

A funeral service for Laird is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke United Methodist Church on the city's north side. Calling will be held Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Crown Hill Funeral Home.

Laird will be buried in a section of Crown Hill Cemetery that is dedicated to local public servants who were killed on the job.

Laird, a four-year veteran of the force, was married with a 7-year-old daughter, for whom a trust fund has been established, the police department said.

The most seriously wounded of the other officers, Patrolman Timothy Conley, was hospitalized Thursday in good condition after surgery for wounds to the abdomen and leg. Officer Leon Essig also is hospitalized in good condition and may be released Thursday, officials said.

The other injured officers were treated after the shooting and released.

Donations to the Kaylee Laird Trust Fund can be made at the Indianapolis Police Department Credit Union, 1502 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46201.
