Butler Officer, Suspect Dead Following Shootings

Authorities: Man Killed Officer Before Being Shot By Police

POSTED: 11:42 am EDT September 24, 2004
UPDATED: 2:37 pm EDT September 25, 2004

A Butler University police officer was fatally shot outside the campus fieldhouse Friday morning, and a suspect in the slaying died after being shot by officers later in the day, authorities said.

Police said Butler Officer James Davis (pictured, left), 31, was shot about 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Hinkle Fieldhouse.

About 12:30 p.m., police shot Kahdir Al Khattab near the intersection of 44th and Illinois streets, a few blocks from campus.

Al Khattab, 26, who police say matched the description of the man who shot Davis, was taken to a local hospital and died shortly before 7 p.m., Marion County sheriff's Capt. Phil Burton said.

The death of Davis, who had worked for the Butler University Police Department since January 2003, was the first homicide ever on the campus, Butler spokesman Marc Allan said.

Police said Davis was called to the fieldhouse at about 10:30 a.m. after receiving a call of a suspicious person at the building as the Butler women's basketball team was practicing, Indianapolis police Sgt. Steve Staletovich said.

Davis saw a person looking into cars in the parking lot and questioned him. Police said they believe that person was Al Khattab, and that he gave Davis a false name.

"(Davis) was able to obtain a name, he was requesting a background check on that person, and that was the last radio transmission we have," Butler Deputy Police Chief Andrew Ryan said.

Police say Kahdir Al Khattab (pictured), a suspect in the shooting death of Butler police Officer James Davis, died Friday evening after being shot by police.

Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot. Davis was shot in the head outside Gate 2 in the parking lot, and the shooter grabbed a gun and fled west, police said.

Within minutes, agencies including U.S. marshals, Marion County sheriff's deputies and state and city police had established a perimeter.

About two hours later, officers saw Al Khattab walking south on Illinois Street, Burton said.

"Officers made a U-turn, and they actually called to him," Burton said. "He actually did a sidestep, pulled out a gun and fired at officers."

Officers returned fire, hitting Al Khattab, police said. No other injuries were reported.

After Al Khattab was captured, he was identified by his fingerprints through Indianapolis police records, authorities said.

Al Khattab had been wanted on a warrant accusing him of battery, police said.

Davis was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital at 11:08 a.m. He is survived by a wife and three children, ages 8, 3 and 1.

Ryan spoke to reporters about the loss of one of the department's own.

Kahdir Al Khattab was shot by police officers in the 4400 block of Illinois Street, police said.

"We're a very tight unit -- there's only 16 of us in the department," Ryan said. "It's a very big loss for us, and we're going to have to step up to the plate and do what we have to do to get our job done."

Several schools were locked down on the city's north side following Davis' shooting, but the lockdowns were lifted after Al Khattab's apprehension, RTV6 reported.

The shooting of Davis happened a little more than five weeks after Indianapolis police Officer Timothy Laird was killed in a shootout on the city's south side in which four other officers were wounded.

Mayor Bart Peterson on Friday ordered flags at all city and county buildings to be flown at half-staff. He called Davis' death another "senseless act of violence."

Student Journalist Witnesses Suspect's Shooting

An IUPUI student journalist says he saw part of a gunbattle involving officers and a man suspected of killing a Butler University police officer Friday.

Keith Kinder says he was driving north on Illinois Street when he saw part of the shootout in his rearview mirror around 12:30 p.m.

"We were going to Butler just to ... see what happened (with the officer's death) this morning," Kinder told RTV6. "(I heard) a couple of gunshots, I looked behind me, and I saw a guy in the middle of the street, laying down.

"I heard a couple more shots, and then I saw a guy take off, and then police cars just rush."

Kinder said he normally covers sports for The Sagamore, the student newspaper for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
