Student Reporter Witnesses Shootout That Injured Suspect

IUPUI Pupil Hears Shots While Driving To Scene Of Officer's Death

POSTED: 10:30 pm EST September 24, 2004

An IUPUI student journalist says he saw part of a gunbattle involving officers and a man suspected of killing a Butler University police officer Friday.

Keith Kinder says he was driving north on Illinois Street when he saw part of the shootout in his rearview mirror around 12:30 p.m.

Police said Kahdir Al Khattab -- suspected of fatally shooting Butler police Officer James Davis (pictured, left) earlier in the day -- shot at officers before one shot him near the intersection of 44th and Illinois streets.

IUPUI student Keith Kinder says he witnessed part of a gunbattle as he was driving toward Butler University on Friday.

"We were going to Butler just to ... see what happened (with the officer's death) this morning," Kinder told RTV6. "(I heard) a couple of gunshots, I looked behind me, and I saw a guy in the middle of the street, laying down.

"I heard a couple more shots, and then I saw a guy take off, and then police cars just rush."

Al Khattab, 26, was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly before 7 p.m., the Marion County Sheriff's Department said.

Police said Al Khattab matched witnesses' descriptions of a gunman who killed Davis outside Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse around 10:30 a.m.

Kinder said he normally covers sports for The Sagamore, the student newspaper for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
