A 4-year-old girl was in serious condition Wednesday after she was struck by a pickup truck at the Indiana State Fair, police said.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. on an access road on the west side of the fairgrounds where trailers and motor homes typically park, state police said.

Madalynn Gembala, 4, of Buchanan, Mich., was walking with her mother, Megan Gembala, when she broke away and stepped into the path of a truck driven by Robert Ingalls, 49, of Mason, Mich., police said.

The girl was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in serious condition.

Police said Ingalls did not appear to be impaired. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital for drug and alcohol testing.

The girl's parents and Ingalls are employed at the fairgrounds midway, police said.
