Police Vow To Find 10-Year-Old Indiana Girl's Killer

Body Discovered In Stream; Authorities Seek Man Seen With Child

UPDATED: 10:53 am EST January 31, 2005

Police in southern Indiana are vowing they will find a 10-year-old girl's killer.

Katlyn Collman

Katlyn Collman's body was found Sunday in a stream about 20 miles from her home in Crothersville. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Police believe "Katie" was abducted last week.

Police are investigating the girl's death as a murder. A state trooper found the body about five miles north of Seymour, Ind.

Authorities did not release information on what they believed was the cause of death.

State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said the child's murder "hits everyone very hard." Police had been searching for the girl since she was reported missing on Tuesday.

Police released this composite sketch of man who reportedly was seen with Katlyn Collman in a pickup truck Jan. 25.

"This is a saddening day for law enforcement officials," Goodin said. "We've come to know Katie. It hits everyone very hard."

The church that Katie and her family attended held a vigil Sunday night in her honor, two nights after holding another vigil praying for her safe return.

"Why Katie? Why Crothersville? Why now? I don't know how many times I've asked that question over the past week, 'Why?'" the Rev. James Higdon said.

"Hard to think in a small town like this. You never think this is going to happen, and then it does. It's hard," a church member said at the vigil.

Terry Goodin, superintendent of the Crothersville schools, said Katie "always had a smile on her face."

Counselors will be available at Katie's school on Monday, Goodin said. Goodin is a state representative and the brother of the state police sergeant who found the girl's body.

They have issued a composite sketch of a young man seen driving Katie in a pickup truck. Witnesses said she didn't look like she was scared or trying to escape. Katie had walked to a store to buy toilet paper and was last seen alive about a block from her home. An Amber Alert was not issued until Thursday because police originally said the case did not meet the criteria for the alert, because nobody witnessed the abduction.

Authorities said they believe the man abducted Katie, and they released a composite image of him Friday. He was described as a white male who was between 18 and 20 years old, between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall, and very skinny with short dark hair and a fair complexion.

The vehicle was described as a white Ford F-150 pickup made in the late 1980s or early 1990s, police said.

During a news conference Sunday to announce the discovery of Katie's body, authorities didn't say how long they believe she had been dead or how long her body had been in the stream. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Louisville, Ky.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information in the case.
