MARION, Ind. -- A couple who owned a used-car dealership have been charged with stealing the identities of customers to obtain more than $100,000 in bank loans.
Troy Meyer, 43, and his wife, Teresa Meyer, 41, were arrested and charged with identity theft and fraud against a financial institution.
The Meyers, who owned the TNT used-car dealership in Marion, used some of their customers' identity information to obtain loans from the Wells Fargo Bank in Arizona, authorities said.Police said most of the victimized customers were the couple's friends and family members, RTV6's Derrik Thomas reported Thursday. The Meyers allegedly told an investigator that most of the loan money was used to keep the business going."However ... they used some of the money to pay their own mortgage and to purchase some things for themselves," Marion police Sgt. Del Garcia said.Police said the Meyers applied for the loans by fax, and that the bank never saw the couple. The couple were free on bond Thursday. The dealership is closed, Thomas reported.
