The funeral for Officer Craig Herbert (pictured, left) will be held at 10 a.m. in Calvary Temple of Indianapolis, 2901 N. Post Road. Visitation will be held there Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Herbert, 34, was the Lawrence Police Department's first officer to die in the line of duty. Police said a stolen minivan driven by a 15-year-old boy broad-sided Herbert's patrol car late Saturday, killing Herbert.

The teen's passenger, also a 15-year-old boy, suffered a broken leg. Both teens were arrested.

Police said another officer was chasing the minivan east on 46th Street when the teen driver lost control at a railroad crossing. The minivan continued past the tracks and slammed into Herbert's patrol car at the intersection of 46th and Franklin Road, police said.

Authorities say a minivan broad-sided Officer Craig Herbert's patrol car at the intersection of 46th Street and Franklin Road late Saturday. Another officer had been pursuing the minivan, which authorities said was reported stolen.

Herbert, who had heard about the pursuit, had been driving north on Franklin as he tried to determine the minivan's location, police said.

Herbert is survived by a wife and two sons.

A trust fund has been established for the boys. Donations can be made to the Children of Patrolman Herbert fund at the Indiana Members Credit Union.
